Keeping fish in aquaria as “pets” (ranked #3, only behind cats and dogs) is both an old and respected, fascinating hobby. Having fish in the home or office brings a sense of calm, wonder to the room and allows for observation and study of a world and animals that is normally inaccessible.
But, hobbyist demands require a vast number of fish be caught and shipped annually. In the U.S. alone, more than 6 million fish are imported each year which translates into about 240 million fish that are caught but 234 million die before reaching the shops and home.
